The Student Volunteer Council provides Rutgers University students with opportunities to participate in community service initiatives during the academic year. The Council acts as a resource for students and organizations to find and plan service initiatives. For questions, comments, or service suggestions please contact the Student Volunteer Council at svc@echo.rutgers.edu.

Service Events
SVC coordinates large-scale volunteer events such as Scarlet Day of Service, Winter Wishes, MLK Jr. Day of Service, and others. These service events provide opportunities for 100+ students to get involved in volunteering. Pre-registration is required for all service events.
Service Days
Service Days are small-scale volunteer events such as trips to Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen, on-campus arts & crafts nights, and visits to senior citizen homes. These events can accommodate anywhere from 10-50 people depending upon the type of event. Pre-registration is required for all service days.
Semester of Service
Semester of Service was created to provide opportunities for semester long service commitments for volunteers looking to gain meaningful and consistent experience for an extended period of time. Pre-registration and a short orientation is required for all Semester of Service volunteers. Here are the Spring 2012 Semester of Service opportunities:
Sammy's Hope Animal Shelter
Wednesdays 5:30pm-7:30pm AND/OR
Saturdays 10:00am-1:00pm
*Must have your own transportation to the site in Edison!*
Work with the volunteer-run organization Sammy's Hope at the Edison Animal Shelter by caring for the dogs and/or cats! Socialize with the animals, go on walks with the dogs, give formal training to the dogs, aide in the adoption process of animals, or just give general help around the shelter all while providing care for adorable animals in need! We ask that volunteers commit to at least one day a week for 9 weeks.

New Brunswick Public Library
Mondays 7:00pm-8:30pm
Tuesdays 7:00pm-8:30pm

Use your computer skills to help those who did not grow up in the computer generation! Volunteers will teach basic computer skills to a walk-in adult patron or someone who makes an appointment to come previously. It will be one-on-one tutoring sessions, and the student doesn't have to prepare anything but their knowledge to use a computer and patience. Some patrons are elderly people who never use a computer. The volunteer will have the opportunity to work on other library tasks if no patrons come in for tutoring on that day. We ask that volunteers commit to at least one day a week for 9 weeks.

Pine Grove Cooperative Nursery School
Monday - Friday 9:00am-12:00pm (commit to at least one day a week)

Since 1957, Pine Grove has been a parent-run cooperative that integrates the best aspects of a "play group" with the educational structure of a developmentally appropriate pre-school program. Volunteers will get the opportunity to assist in the classrooms, as well as with general administrative duties. We ask that Volunteers commit to volunteering at least once a week for 9 weeks.

Youth Empowerment Services
Monday-Friday 3:30-5:30pm (commit to at least one day a week)

Youth Empowerment Services is a non-profit, volunteer oriented organization, providing educational assistance, prevention and intervention programs for at-risk youth to assist them in reaching their highest potential. We have two opportunities for ongoing service at Youth Empowerment Services: tutoring and helping with Excite Nights.
Tutoring: Volunteers will assist in tutoring students in 1st-8th grade! We ask that Volunteers commit to come at least once a week (the same day preferably) for 9 weeks.
Monday-Friday 3:30-5:30pm.
Excite Night: Volunteers help with the night time activities for the children. Volunteers on Mondays will be interacting with 5th-8th grade students and on Thursdays with 1st-4th grade students!
Monday or Thursday 6:00-8:00pm

Parker at Stonegate, Assisted Living Residence
Mondays-Sundays 7:30am-9:30am

Volunteers are needed to help with various activities with the senior citizens at the Assisted Living Residence. We ask that Volunteers commit to come at least once a week (the same day preferably) for 9 weeks.

New Brunswick Middle School Avid Program
Mondays-Thursdays 8:35am-2:35pm
*Must have your own transportation to the site*
The AVID Program is designed to give our students tutoring during the school day. Volunteers will tutor during 40 minute AVID elective classes and assist teachers during Math and Language Classes as needed. Our school day is from 8:35am-2:35pm. All tutors are must be fingerprinted and approved by the Board of Education before starting. The AVID program will pay for the fingerprinting for those that are serious about working with middle sSchool students.
