About Mabel Smith Douglass (1874-1933)

Mabel Smith Douglass was a very persistent, conservative feminist. She was the founder and first dean on the New Jersey College for Women, which is now known as Douglass Residential College. While she was dean of the college, Douglass was personally involved with students. For example, Douglass knew the name of each student and attended student social events when the college was still small. She even helped care for students during the Spanish Influenza Epidemic and became ill herself because of that. Douglass also valued her students' opinions. Her diligence and determination was the reason for the triumph of the New Jersey College for Women.
